With over 1.25 billion websites on the internet and counting, it’s probably a safe bet that your site isn’t the only one of its kind on the web. It’s here that search engines come in, helping internet users find the products, websites, videos and photos that they’re looking for.
As a brand or business, it’s imperative that your site ranks as high up on search result lists as possible, where the first result receives nearly one third of user traffic. But placing high is more complicated than you might think. One aspect of digital marketing, called search engine optimization (SEO) aims to propel your website to the top.
Simply put, SEO is a set of strategies that marketers and website administrators employ to help their websites rank higher in search engine results. When someone using a search engine like Google enters their search terms, the engine uses algorithms in order to decide which websites should come up as a result, and in what order.
Different search engines (Yahoo!, Bing, or Google for example) use different algorithms, but the buckets of categories they weigh when ranking a website stay more or less the same. By looking at your site’s keywords, social media metrics, links, traffic and user data among other factors, a list is compiled and builds what users ultimately see after they enter a search. SEO seeks to identify factors, and hijack them to help your site place higher in search results.
There are far too many SEO strategies to go into detail here, but we can definitely share a few of our favorites. The good news is that, for the most part, SEO strategies lead to inherently “better” websites that are more clearly understood and user-friendly. If you’re passionate about your business’ online presence, you’re probably doing your own SEO without even knowing it.
Optimization strategies (as part of a total SEO plan) should include basic changes like content editing. Blogs, website pages, and any other content featured should include titles and keywords that are relevant and easily searchable.
Backlinks, the number of times other websites publish links to your own, are also incorporated into search engines’ complex ranking systems. To increase your score here, your website should be easily shareable and again, provide content that is relevant to the product or service you are providing.
Finally, having a well-designed website is also inherent to SEO. Not only does a well-designed site mean a better user experience and an easily searchable structure, but it will also help your website rank against factors like speed and cross-device compatibility that search engines measure. In a mobile-first country like Myanmar, a lot of the SEO work we do as an agency focuses on building websites that work beautifully on smartphones.
As online business continues to grow in Myanmar (and elsewhere), search engine optimization will only become more and more important. As always, we’re here to help with a team made up of the best web strategists and designers in Myanmar.
